LCIA arbitration,
from London to the world.
The London Court of International Arbitration administers arbitrations under the LCIA Arbitration Rules 2020, effective 1 October 2020. LCIA arbitrations are often, though not necessarily, seated in London, where English arbitration law — reformed by the Arbitration Act 2025 for arbitrations commenced on or after 1 August 2025 — governs court support and challenges to the award.
ME Law acts for claimants and respondents in LCIA arbitrations and in the court proceedings that support or supervise them — from the request and the formation of the tribunal to the award and its enforcement under the New York Convention, with English counsel wherever an application to the English courts is required.

The LCIA and the ICC are different regimes. Strategy follows the rules the parties actually chose.
An LCIA case is won
*on early,
deliberate choices.*
The LCIA framework gives parties and tribunals real flexibility. Flexibility favours the side that has decided what it needs — on the tribunal, the procedure and urgent relief — before the other side has.
The framework the parties chose
Scope, preconditions, seat, language, the number of arbitrators and the version of the LCIA Rules that applies — identified before the request or response is filed.
English law, or another
Where the seat is London, the Arbitration Act 1996 as amended in 2025 governs court support and challenges; the law of the arbitration agreement and of the contract are addressed separately.
Formation by the LCIA Court
The LCIA Court appoints the tribunal, taking account of the parties’ nominations and agreed methods. We weigh expertise, availability and independence — and apply for expedited formation where urgency requires it.
Efficient and proportionate
Written statements, document production, witness and expert evidence and hearings are shaped to the dispute, using the tribunal’s powers of early determination where a claim or defence is manifestly without merit.
An award that holds
We plan for enforcement where the assets are, and for the limited challenges available at the seat.

The LCIA Rules 2020
The LCIA Arbitration Rules 2020 took effect on 1 October 2020. The LCIA Court appoints every tribunal, taking account of the parties’ nominations and any agreed method, and arbitrators are paid by the hour rather than by reference to the amount in dispute. The Rules provide for:
- the expedited formation of the tribunal, and emergency arbitrators in urgent cases;
- early determination of claims and defences that are manifestly outside jurisdiction, inadmissible or manifestly without merit;
- consolidation of related arbitrations and composite requests under several arbitration agreements;
- virtual hearings and electronic communications, with provisions on data protection and information security.
London as the seat: the Arbitration Act 2025
The Arbitration Act 2025 amended the Arbitration Act 1996 for arbitrations seated in England and Wales and commenced on or after 1 August 2025. It:
- made the law of the seat govern the arbitration agreement unless the parties expressly agree otherwise;
- codified the arbitrator’s duty to disclose circumstances that might reasonably give rise to justifiable doubts about impartiality;
- gave tribunals an express power to make awards on a summary basis;
- clarified the courts’ powers in support of emergency arbitrators.
Challenging an English-seated award
An award made in an arbitration seated in England and Wales can be challenged in the English courts for lack of substantive jurisdiction or serious irregularity. An appeal on a point of English law is available only if the parties have not excluded it — and the LCIA Rules generally exclude it. Challenges must usually be brought within 28 days of the award, so the timetable for any challenge is short.
Enforcing an LCIA award
An LCIA award is enforced under the New York Convention wherever the debtor’s assets are — see award enforcement and our page on disputes with UK parties.

Facing an LCIA arbitration?
Discuss it in confidence.
Whether you are preparing a request, responding to one, or deciding whether an LCIA clause belongs in your contract, speak with senior counsel before the first deadline.
Consultations are held in person or by video, wherever you are. Describe the matter briefly — no confidential details are needed until a conflict check is complete.
